Gardens are much more than simply a venue for decorating. It is also more than just something people with green thumbs can do. It is an activity which offers the gardener opportunities for achieving serenity and gaining a greater appreciation of life. You will improve your skills and feel closely connected to your garden.
Transform your gardening tool handles into clever measurement rulers. Tools with long handles such as hoes and rakes can double as measuring sticks. Just lay your tool down on the floor then lay a yardstick beside the handle. Mark the measurements with a permanent marker. You will never find yourself looking for a ruler thanks to this simple tip.
Use climbers if you want to cover any fences or walls. Climbing plants are known to be very versatile, and can help hide any ugly wall or fence, and this often only takes one growing season. They can cover an arbor, or grow through trees and shrubs. Some of these plants must have support, and some can attach themselves to something using their stems and tendrils. Trusted variations of climbers are honeysuckle, jasmine, clematis, wisteria and climbing roses.
Take extra care of any fragile shrubs that are known to drop their leaves in the autumn. Shrubs that are planted in containers are especially susceptible to frost and must be carefully protected. Tie the canes together, and drape a sheet or blanket over the top of the wigwam. People sometimes use plastic to wrap their plants, but plastic can cause the plants to rot because it impedes air circulation.
For an unusual, but effective, organic solution to weeding young plants, try “boiling” the weeds away. A pot of very hot water is one of the most effective ways you can get rid of the weeds in your garden. Just douse the weeds directly with boiling water, taking care to avoid damaging nearby plants. Boiling water can hurt the roots of weeds and can prevent them from growing.
Buy a wheelbarrow and kneeling stool to work with in the garden. Get a portable stool if you want to garden comfortably without damaging your knees. Gardening also usually requires that you transport heavy loads, such as dirt or mulch, and a wheelbarrow will make this much easier to do.
Sensibly water your garden. A soaker hose can save valuable time by watering all of your plants simultaneously, removing the need for hauling a watering can or hose around to each plant. To avoid damaging delicate plants, you should water them with low pressure. Watering your garden for a couple hours while you are working on other tasks is an efficient use of your time.
Try planting some heather to draw beautiful insects to your yard. Bees love heather, and it is a favorite stop when they emerge in early spring.
Plant a heather bed, it will house many bugs that are good for a garden such as spiders and ground beetles. Keep this in mind and remember to always wear appropriate gardening gloves.
Include your kids in growing an organic garden. You can provide a good learning experience that your children can appreciate the more they learn on how to grow healthy produce.
Before you start any gardening, make sure that you do not have any open wounds on your hands. If you do, you need to wear protection from dirt and chemicals so that they do not get into your cut. A cut could get infected if it gets in contact with grime and dirt in the garden. You can completely seal the area using some of the great bandages that are now available.
When you are working in your garden, you will want to have all of your tools in a convenient location. One of the biggest time wasters is not keeping track of your tools and having to look for them every time you need them. Take the time to prepare the necessary tools, and then store them in a easily accessed place once you are done horticulture. Get a tool belt if you need to, or a pair of pants with a lot of pockets.
Apply the tips from above to bring new life to your garden. Once your garden is back to its blooming glory, you will feel gratified and renewed yourself. Gardening has the potential to change your whole outlook on life, if you let it. So get started today!
